Left exactly as the earth made it.

Most tourmaline sold as jewelry is tumbled smooth or cut into beads. Ours isn't. Each crystal keeps its ridges, its striations and the faint golden sheen of iron along the grain, because that is what black tourmaline looks like when it leaves the rock.

It forms deep in granite under heat and pressure, in long prismatic columns. The finest raw crystals come from Brazil, where it has been worked by hand for generations. We select each one for size, structure and a clean natural termination.

What the ancients knew.

Long before anyone could explain it, people noticed this stone does something.

Across cultures, black tourmaline was the stone you carried into a dark place. Healers wore it as a shield against ill will. Travelers kept it in a pocket for safe passage. It was set at doorways to keep what was outside, outside.

Then physics caught up. Tourmaline is pyroelectric and piezoelectric: warm it or press it and it builds a real electrical charge. Dutch traders in the 1700s used it to pull ash from their pipes. In 1880 the Curie brothers used it in the experiments that discovered piezoelectricity.

Modern tradition holds that it releases negative ions, the same charge in the air after a lightning storm or beside breaking waves. We pass that on as tradition, not as a medical claim.

The name
From the Sinhalese turmali, "mixed stones", the word Sri Lankan gem traders used for the coloured crystals they sold to Dutch merchants.
Schorl
The black variety takes its name from Zschorlau, a mining village in Saxony, where it was written about before 1400 as a stone found alongside tin.
The shield
In folk tradition from Europe to the Andes it is a grounding stone and a protector, worn against envy, the evil eye and the drain of other people's moods.

Questions people ask before ordering

Is it real black tourmaline?

Yes. Natural, unheated, undyed black tourmaline (schorl). Raw stones show striations, matte and glossy patches and sometimes flecks of mica or iron. Glass and resin don't, and polished beads hide all of it.

Where does the stone come from?

Brazil, the world's great source of tourmaline, where it is mined by hand from pegmatite veins. Each crystal is selected individually for size and structure before it is wrapped.

How big and how heavy is it?

Crystals run 1.5 to 2 inches long and roughly an ounce. Substantial enough to feel, light enough to wear all day. Look at the palm photo for scale.

Does it really release negative ions?

Tourmaline is pyroelectric and piezoelectric, which is measurable physics: it builds an electrical charge when warmed or pressed. The negative-ion tradition grows from that. We won't sell it to you as medicine. We sell it as a real stone with a real charge and a very old story.

How do I cleanse and care for it?

Tradition says to set it on the earth or in moonlight overnight, and many owners do. Practically: keep the leather wrap dry, take it off for showers and swimming, and it will last for years.

Is it for men or women?

Both. The raw stone and black cord read masculine, the adjustable length lets it sit as a long pendant or a short one.
