Glass the volcano made. Polished until it shows you back.

Obsidian isn't a crystal at all. It is lava that cooled so fast it never had time to form one, which is why it breaks into edges sharper than steel and polishes into a true mirror. The Aztecs made their scrying mirrors from it. We make a bar.

Each bar is cut from natural obsidian and hand-polished on all six faces until the black goes deep enough to hold your reflection. It is knotted, not glued, onto a waxed cotton cord with two slide knots, so it wears high over a shirt or low against the skin and can be re-strung for life.

Cool to the touch, then warm. Sits flat, catches light, never shouts.

Knotted, not glued

The bar hangs from a hand-tied cord loop. No adhesive on the stone, no metal bail to tarnish. If the cord ever wears, the stone is re-strung in a minute.

A cord that adjusts to you

Two slide knots let you wear it high over a shirt or low against the skin, 18 to 28 inches. No clasp to fail. It suits men and women equally.

Wear it for a month. Then decide.

If it isn't right for you, send it back within 30 days for a full refund. No questions. If a crystal arrives cracked, we replace it.

What the ancients knew.

The Aztecs called it the smoking mirror, and looked into it to see the truth.

Obsidian is the oldest tool humans ever made. Blades of it, sharper than any metal, have been found beside fires that burned 700,000 years ago. The Aztecs polished it into mirrors for their priests and named a god after it, Tezcatlipoca, the smoking mirror, who saw everything and hid nothing.

That is why tradition treats it differently from tourmaline. Tourmaline shields. Obsidian reveals. It is worn to cut through fog, to see a person or a situation as it is, and to ground you while you look. Surgeons still use obsidian scalpels today for cuts that heal cleaner than steel.

We pass the tradition on as tradition, not as a medical claim. What we can promise is real volcanic glass with a real edge and a very old story.

The name
From Obsius, a Roman who, Pliny the Elder wrote, first brought the black glass to Rome from Ethiopia.
Volcanic glass
Lava rich in silica that cooled too fast to crystallize. Chemically a rock, structurally a glass. Hardness 5 to 5.5, but its fractured edge is sharper than a surgical blade.
The mirror
Aztec and Maya priests polished it into scrying mirrors. John Dee, astrologer to Elizabeth I, owned one; it sits in the British Museum.
The grounding stone
In folk tradition it is the stone of truth and protection, worn to see clearly and to release what you've been carrying.

Questions people ask before ordering

Is it real obsidian?

Yes. Natural volcanic glass, cut and polished, not dyed glass or resin. Hold it to the light: real obsidian shows faint depth and occasional tiny bubbles or bands in the black. Man-made glass is too even, and resin is too light in the hand.

Where does the stone come from?

Volcanic regions of Mexico and Brazil, where it is collected from ancient lava flows. Each piece is selected individually for a clean face before it is wrapped.

How big and how heavy is it?

Bars run about 1.6 inches long and half an inch wide, a little under an ounce. Substantial enough to feel, light enough to wear all day. Look at the palm photo for scale.

Will the polish scratch?

Obsidian sits at 5 to 5.5 on the hardness scale, softer than quartz. Keys and sand can mark it over years. Kept out of the pocket with your keys, it stays a mirror.

How do I cleanse and care for it?

Obsidian is glass: it can take water, and the waxed cord dries fast. Wipe the bar with a soft cloth to bring the mirror back. Tradition says to set it on the earth or in moonlight overnight, and many owners do.

Is it for men or women?

Both. The dark bar and brown cord read masculine, the adjustable length lets it sit as a long pendant or a short one.

What's in the pair?

One polished black obsidian bar necklace and one raw black tourmaline necklace, on identical cords. Obsidian for clarity, tourmaline for grounding, in the traditional reading. Many people keep one and give one.
